Videos in Global Player

I designed and helped launch a native video experience in Global Player across apps and web. The work focused on information architecture and video destination that brought Global's original video into Global Player with a taxonomy for browsing and content management.

Videos in Global Player apps and web

The outcome

  • Achieved 600k+ video views in the first 6 months
  • Contributed to wider goal of user acquisition of monthly active users
  • Designed and delivered the first native video destination inside Global Player (iOS, Android and web)
  • Created a structured taxonomy to support scalable video management
  • set the team up for a phased rollout with branded video pages in a later phase

Context and goals

Global produces thousands of original video assets and millions of views each month, but the content lived and was consumed mostly on third-party platforms.

Product and editorial leadership wanted to bring that content into Global Player to improve engagement and evolve the product into a multi-format media destination.

Drive users to Global Player

Create a destination that brought viewers into the product instead of leaving video on external platforms.

Showcase original video content

Surface video from across Global brands in a way that felt coherent and easy to browse.

Build for scale

Create an IA and metadata structure that could support branded pages, future monetisation, and fast reaction to content trends.

My role and contribution

  • Mapped out the information architecture and metadata structure for videos.
  • Designed the UI patterns for video carousels, collections, and playback for web and apps.
  • Insights from desk research and two academic papers on video search and watch behaviour
  • Built a responsive web prototype to show content agnostic UI pattern for collection listing pages
  • Partnered with product owner, designer team, editors, and engineers across multiple rounds of reviews and prioritisation, testing, and iterative release planning
